A new study published in the journal Jama Network Open has found a significant correlation between the release dates of major music albums and an increase in fatal U.S. motor vehicle crashes. Researchers, led by Dr. Vishal Patel of Harvard Medical School,
analyzed data from a population-based registry of fatal U.S. crashes, focusing on the release dates of 10 top-streaming albums between 2017 and 2022, including Drake's 'Scorpion,' Taylor Swift's 'Midnights,' and Harry Styles' 'Harry’s House.' The study revealed a 15.1% relative increase in U.S. traffic fatalities on these album release days compared to similar days before and after. This increase is estimated to account for approximately 182 additional fatalities attributable to the release days of the included albums. The team also observed a 43% surge in streaming volume for the top 200 songs in the U.S. on these release dates. The researchers suggest that the act of accessing new music, which often involves multiple steps on a smartphone, contributes to distracted driving.
