What's Happening?
Public Lending Right International (PLRI) has transitioned from an informal network to a formal international association under Swiss law, headquartered in Geneva. PLRI supports authors and rightsholders
by ensuring they receive payments when libraries lend their works. The association's founding organizations include EVA, EWC, FEP, IPA, and several collective management organizations. PLRI aims to bring together global stakeholders to exchange best practices and assist countries in establishing or improving public lending right systems. Arjen Polman, CEO of Stichting Leenrecht, has been elected as the president of PLRI. The association plans to organize a PLR International Conference in 2026.
Why It's Important?
The formalization of PLRI as an international association marks a significant step in supporting authors and rightsholders globally. By establishing a legal entity, PLRI can more effectively advocate for fair compensation for authors when their works are lent by libraries. This development could lead to improved public lending right systems worldwide, benefiting authors financially and encouraging the creation of new works. The association's efforts to share best practices and provide technical assistance can help standardize and enhance the implementation of public lending rights, promoting cultural and literary diversity.
