Portal Space Systems, a space maneuverability startup based in Bothell, Washington, has announced the development of a new spacecraft named Starburst. This ESPA-class vehicle is designed to maneuver payloads in orbit and is set to make its first flight
in 2026. Initially conceived as a risk-reduction tool for the company's larger Supernova inter-orbit shuttle, Starburst has garnered interest from customers for its precise maneuvering capabilities. The vehicle will be part of a Transporter mission in the fourth quarter of 2026, carrying three customer payloads, including a camera for video capture and a superconducting magnetic actuator for precision maneuvering. Portal Space Systems has self-funded the research and development of the thrusters and propulsion systems for these vehicles, aiming to cater to both commercial and defense sectors.
