What's Happening?
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has initiated an Expression of Interest process to find delivery partners for a new national forest in the Oxford-Cambridge Corridor. This
initiative is part of a broader commitment to create three new national forests, with the Oxford-Cambridge forest being the second following the Western Forest in the West of England. The project aims to plant millions of trees, enhancing local wildlife habitats and creating green jobs. Interested organizations are encouraged to demonstrate their expertise in large-scale woodland creation and community engagement. The deadline for submissions is January 30, 2026.
Why It's Important?
The creation of a new national forest in the Oxford-Cambridge Corridor represents a significant environmental and economic initiative. It aligns with the UK government's commitment to invest over £1 billion in tree planting and forestry sector support. This project is expected to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and provide recreational spaces for communities. Additionally, it will create job opportunities in forestry and related sectors, contributing to local economic development. The initiative also supports the UK's broader environmental goals, including carbon reduction and climate change mitigation.
What's Next?
Organizations interested in becoming delivery partners must submit their Expressions of Interest by January 30, 2026. Defra and the National Forest Company will evaluate submissions to identify suitable partners. The selected partners will collaborate on the forest's development, focusing on sustainable practices and community involvement. As the project progresses, further details on implementation timelines and specific environmental targets are expected to be released.
