What's Happening?
Researchers at UBC Okanagan are conducting a study on the long-term mental health impacts of wildfire evacuations in the Okanagan region. The study, led by clinical psychology student Brittany Barber and Dr. Lesley Lutes, seeks participants who have experienced
evacuation or displacement due to wildfires in the past five years. The research aims to fill a gap in understanding the prolonged mental health effects on individuals forced from their homes. Participants will complete a confidential online survey, with some invited for virtual interviews.
Why It's Important?
The study addresses a critical aspect of disaster response by focusing on the mental health consequences of wildfires, which are becoming more frequent and severe. Understanding these impacts can inform public health strategies and improve support services for affected individuals. The findings could lead to better mental health resources and policies, ensuring that communities are better equipped to handle the psychological toll of such disasters. This research highlights the need for comprehensive disaster management that includes mental health considerations.
