India is experiencing a deepening monsoon crisis, with a substantial rainfall deficit recorded in September and throughout the broader southwest monsoon season. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall between September 1 and September 9
was 44.3 mm, a 26% deficit compared to the normal 59.9 mm. The overall seasonal deficit from June 1 to September 9 stands at 15%, with 648 mm received against a normal of 760.6 mm. This weak and uneven monsoon season has been characterized by prolonged dry spells across large parts of the country. Central and southern Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh, have seen rainfall plunge below normal levels in early September. A satellite image from September 10 shows a significant reduction in cloud cover over vast stretches of western, central, and northern India, indicating the monsoon is entering its final phase with limited time for recovery.
