A recent analysis of health data from 2,381 adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) revealed a notable association between lycopene supplementation and lower diabetes prevalence. Researchers examined various
supplements, including calcium, iodine, molybdenum, and lycopene, alongside diabetes status and measures of biological aging. After adjusting for other factors and correcting for potential false-positive findings, lycopene was the only supplement that remained significantly linked to lower diabetes prevalence. Individuals who reported taking lycopene supplements had approximately 91% lower odds of having diabetes compared to those who did not. It is important to note that this study observed an association and does not prove that lycopene directly prevents diabetes. Initial associations with calcium, iodine, and molybdenum disappeared after further analysis. The study also explored the role of biological aging, finding that three measures of aging showed the strongest signs of explaining the relationship between lycopene and diabetes.
