The Agriculture Minister Floyd Green has announced a $3 billion recovery plan to aid the agricultural sector in Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The hurricane resulted in $29.5
billion in losses, affecting approximately 41,390 hectares of farmland and over 70,000 farmers. The Agricultural Disaster Recovery Task Force has been established to coordinate assessments, relief, and recovery efforts. Immediate actions include redirecting J$450 million from the Production Incentive Programme for emergency recovery, replanting, restocking, and land preparation. The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) will distribute seeds worth J$40 million, and additional funds have been allocated for emergency procurement of seeds and agro-chemicals. The plan also includes free land preparation services and free distribution of seeds and planting materials for the next three months.
