A recent study published in Environment International indicates a significant association between elevated exposure to certain pesticides and an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women. Researchers from the University of Arizona
and Harvard University utilized data from the Arizona Prenatal Environment and Reproductive Outcomes Study (AZ-PEARS) to analyze pesticide exposure within 500 meters of residences. The study found that exposure to pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides, particularly during preconception and the third trimester, correlated with a higher risk of GDM. Specific organophosphates like acephate and ethephon, and pyrethroids such as beta-cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, and permethrin, were identified as contributing to this elevated risk. This research highlights the importance of shifting away from pesticides linked to adverse health outcomes, not only for those directly applying them but also for residential communities affected by off-target exposure through drift.
