What's Happening?
The Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) have completed the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks (MBTs), as announced by KNDS and the HDF. The final tank was delivered to the 1st Armoured Brigade
in Tata on December 12. This acquisition is part of a contract signed in December 2018, which also includes 24 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, three Leguan armoured vehicle-launched bridges, five Wisent armoured recovery vehicles, a simulation centre, and a comprehensive training and logistics package. Additionally, Hungary received 12 second-hand Leopard 2A4s for training purposes. These new German vehicles are set to replace the HDF's older T-72 MBTs and D-20 152 mm towed gun howitzers.
Why It's Important?
The completion of this acquisition marks a significant modernization of Hungary's military capabilities, enhancing its defense posture within the region. The Leopard 2A7 is one of the most advanced main battle tanks in the world, offering improved protection, mobility, and firepower. This upgrade is crucial for Hungary as it seeks to bolster its national security and fulfill its commitments to NATO. The modernization effort also reflects Hungary's strategic shift towards more advanced military technology, potentially influencing regional military dynamics. The inclusion of training and logistics support ensures that the HDF can effectively integrate and maintain these new systems, thereby increasing operational readiness.
