Frontex, the European Union's border agency, has completed a significant 19-day operational evaluation of shipborne V-BAT unmanned aircraft, manufactured by California-based defense technology company Shield AI. The trial, conducted in partnership with
the Italian Coast Guard, involved deploying two V-BAT drones from the Italian offshore patrol vessel Luigi Dattilo in the Mediterranean. These drones were fully integrated into the ship's command systems, providing real-time operational intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities up to 150 kilometers beyond the vessel's traditional sensors. This marks the first time Frontex has simultaneously operated two drones in the 50-100kg class from a patrol ship, accumulating 150 flying hours and often remaining airborne for up to 20 hours daily. The V-BAT's vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) design allows it to operate from confined deck spaces without the need for catapults or arrestor systems, making it suitable for coast guard and naval operations.
