What's Happening?
Ameresco, in collaboration with The Resilience Authority of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, Maryland, has announced plans to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across nine county-owned facilities. The initiative will add 82 new charging ports,
including a mix of Level 2 and DC fast chargers, to support the county's transition to electric fleet vehicles. The project aims to reduce environmental footprints and operating costs by utilizing Ameresco's Charging and Energy Management system, ChargePilot, which optimizes charging during off-peak periods to achieve significant utility savings.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of EV charging infrastructure is a critical step in supporting the transition to electric vehicles, which are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. By investing in charging capabilities, Maryland is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transportation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering emissions. The initiative also aligns with broader goals to electrify government fleets, which can serve as a model for other regions seeking to enhance their green infrastructure and reduce operational costs.
What's Next?
The county plans to continue its transition to electric vehicles, with all non-emergency light- and medium-duty fleet purchases being electric by 2032, and emergency vehicle purchases following by 2037. The successful implementation of the charging infrastructure will likely encourage further investments in EV technology and infrastructure, potentially influencing policy decisions and encouraging private sector participation in sustainable transportation initiatives.
