What's Happening?
Rhode Island's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin providing local fire stations with the addresses of residents who own electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrids with high-voltage lithium-ion batteries. This initiative, set to start in January 2027,
aims to enhance firefighter preparedness in case of EV-related fires, which can pose unique challenges due to the nature of lithium-ion batteries. The DMV will send this information biannually, although the data will not include vehicle registration numbers or VINs, focusing instead on make, model, year, and address.
