A long-term study published in Psychiatry Research has examined the effects of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on adult life. The research followed individuals diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, their siblings, and a control group
over 18 years. The study found that adults who had ADHD as children face more challenges in various aspects of life compared to their peers. These challenges include higher rates of mood disorders, lower educational attainment, and reduced job stability. The study also highlighted that siblings of children with ADHD generally experience typical adult functioning, suggesting that many difficulties are specific to the condition itself. The research involved 154 adults with childhood ADHD, 138 siblings, and 129 controls, all from the Netherlands. Participants were evaluated on psychiatric status, behavioral and emotional problems, academic and professional history, and other areas of daily functioning.
