What's Happening?
Mesa Community College (MCC) in Arizona is expanding its educational offerings to address workforce shortages in the construction and data center industries. The college has launched a new 22-credit Certificate
of Completion in Data Center Operations, providing hands-on training in data center infrastructure and safety. Additionally, MCC has expanded its Construction Trades Program, including the creation of a unique 1.5-acre construction 'laydown yard' for practical training. This expansion is supported by a $1 million Gable Grant from the Lowe’s Foundation, with over $483,000 directed to MCC. The Arizona Department of Transportation and other industry partners are also contributing to scholarships and equipment. The expansion aims to address a significant skills gap in Arizona, where the construction industry is experiencing a workforce shortage of 195,440 trained professionals.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of MCC's programs is crucial in addressing the growing demand for skilled workers in the construction and data center sectors. Arizona is experiencing rapid growth in infrastructure projects, data centers, and industrial warehouses, necessitating a skilled workforce. The construction industry alone is projected to add 37,000 new jobs by 2031. The shortage of skilled tradespeople, with a current deficit of 150,000 workers, highlights the importance of such educational initiatives. By providing hands-on training and industry-recognized certifications, MCC is preparing students for high-demand careers, thereby supporting economic growth and development in the region.
What's Next?
MCC plans to introduce additional courses in masonry, HVAC, and solar energy in the coming years, further expanding its curriculum to meet industry needs. The college is also collaborating with Arizona State University to enhance educational opportunities. As the demand for skilled workers continues to rise, MCC's programs are expected to play a significant role in bridging the skills gap and supporting the state's economic development.
