What's Happening?
The Freedom 13, a non-profit organization founded by Mark Schmitz, is expanding its recreational camps for veterans and law enforcement personnel across the United States. The initiative was inspired by the loss of Schmitz's son, Jared, a Marine who died
in a 2021 suicide bombing in Afghanistan. The camps aim to provide a healing environment for veterans and their families, offering a week in nature to improve mental health and build community connections. The organization plans to establish 50 retreats, one in each state, with 13 homes per site, potentially serving over 33,000 individuals annually. The first property was acquired in Bourbon, Missouri, where two homes have been built, with plans for 11 more.
Why It's Important?
This initiative addresses the critical issue of mental health among veterans and law enforcement officers, offering a unique approach to support those affected by PTSD, depression, and suicide. By providing a space for rest and community, The Freedom 13 aims to reduce the stigma around mental health and offer alternative healing options. The expansion of these retreats could significantly impact the well-being of thousands of veterans and their families, highlighting the importance of mental health resources and community support for those who have served the nation.
What's Next?
The Freedom 13 is actively fundraising to complete the construction of additional homes at its Missouri site and plans to hire veterans as property managers for each retreat. The organization is also raising awareness about veteran suicide and collaborating with various groups to address this national crisis. Future fundraising events include a marathon and a memorial motorcycle ride, aiming to generate ongoing support for the retreats and their mission.
