What's Happening?
X-energy, a leading designer of advanced small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and fuel technology, has finalized an agreement with Centrus to secure High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) supply. This definitive agreement will provide X-energy with enrichment
services for both Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) and HALEU, crucial for supporting an 11.5 GW pipeline of planned Xe-100 advanced reactors. The HALEU, enriched by Centrus at the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio, will be supplied to X-energy’s fuel subsidiary, TRISO-X, LLC, for the fabrication of TRISO-X coated particle fuel at its facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This partnership aims to de-risk X-energy’s Xe-100 project pipeline and secure a portion of the initial fuel needs for its commercial projects, marking a significant step in commercializing next-generation nuclear fuel within the U.S. domestic fuel cycle.

X-energy had previously secured initial HALEU for its first Xe-100 project through the U.S. Department of Energy’s HALEU Availability Program. The U.S. currently relies on 96 commercial reactors providing approximately 98 GW of capacity, generating about 18% of the nation’s total electricity.
