Lockheed Martin UK has been awarded a £20 million ($26 million) contract by the UK's National Armaments Director Group for the development of Project Bowline, an advanced hypersonic target program. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Defence's
Science and Technology Oriented Research and Development in Missile Defence (STORM) program. The project involves designing, manufacturing, qualifying, and testing a hypersonic target vehicle at Lockheed Martin's Bedfordshire facility. The target is designed to simulate next-generation high-speed threats, traveling at speeds above Mach 5, providing a realistic test environment for future missile defense systems. The project aims to enhance national capabilities in hypersonic systems modeling, manufacturing, and testing, while fostering collaboration across industry, academia, and smaller companies. A live flight demonstration is planned for 2027 at the MoD Hebrides Range.
