What's Happening?
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a $14.1 million loan to the Aqaba Digital Hub (ADH) in Jordan. This funding is aimed at expanding ADH's existing data centre, which is the largest Tier 3 carrier-neutral data centre in Jordan. The loan will
be used to settle supplier commitments and construct a second hall at the facility. Additionally, the financing will support the launch of the Aqaba Digital Academy, which will provide specialized training in information and communications technology (ICT) and cybersecurity, with a focus on promoting skills development among women and young people. ADH is a key player in Jordan's digital infrastructure, operating a data centre, fibre-optic networks, and subsea cables, and serves as a connectivity hub linking Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it strengthens Jordan's position as a regional digital hub, enhancing its connectivity with Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The expansion of the data centre and the establishment of the Aqaba Digital Academy are expected to boost the local digital economy by providing advanced ICT and cybersecurity training. This initiative aligns with the growing demand for resilient and diversified digital infrastructure routes, which are crucial for supporting new connectivity between Asia and Europe. The focus on skills development, particularly for women and young people, is likely to have a positive impact on the local workforce, fostering a more inclusive digital economy.
What's Next?
The expansion of the Aqaba Digital Hub is expected to enhance Jordan's role as a connectivity corridor, potentially attracting more international clients and investments. The launch of the Aqaba Digital Academy will likely lead to increased local talent development, supporting the country's evolving digital economy. As the demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow, further investments in similar projects may be anticipated, contributing to the region's economic growth and technological advancement.
