What's Happening?
Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, a Ghanaian nurse and recipient of the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, has launched the Cancer Care Africa Foundation (CanCAF) along with the Cancer Genetic Counselling Certificate Programme for Oncology Nurses in Africa (CGCP-ON
Africa). The launch event took place at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre at the University of Ghana, gathering policymakers, healthcare leaders, and oncology professionals. The initiative aims to tackle late cancer diagnosis, low awareness, and workforce shortages in Africa. Naomi emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and equitable cancer care, stating that the foundation is committed to improving cancer outcomes through workforce development and advocacy.
Why It's Important?
The launch of CanCAF is significant as it addresses critical gaps in cancer care across Africa, where late diagnosis and limited access to treatment are prevalent. By focusing on workforce development and early detection, the foundation aims to improve survival rates and reduce the burden of cancer on families. The initiative also highlights the growing role of genomics and innovation in healthcare, aligning with Ghana's Cancer Control Plan. This development could lead to better healthcare infrastructure and increased collaboration among African nations, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients across the continent.
