Virginia Beach City Public Schools has entered into an agreement with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, to provide its personnel with a tailored, more secure version of the large language model. This specialized software is designed exclusively for staff
use and is not intended for students. According to David Din, the school district's chief information officer, the software will be provided at no cost to the district until June 2028. The initiative aims to offer teachers a secure environment to utilize AI tools for administrative oversight and governance-compliant tasks, such as creating classroom reference guides, converting lesson plans, and managing complex scheduling. Virginia Beach is one of over 50 school districts nationwide, including Houston, Baltimore, and Boise, Idaho, that have established partnerships with OpenAI to integrate AI into their educational frameworks.
