What's Happening?
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing maritime security across the Red Sea, East Africa, Southern Africa, and the Western Indian Ocean regions. This announcement
was made during the EU Regional Maritime Security Week held in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 2-5, 2025. The event, hosted by the Government of Kenya with support from the European Union, brought together 112 delegates from 16 countries and 12 regional and international organizations. Discussions focused on the achievements of EU-funded programs aimed at combating piracy, illicit trafficking, and maritime terrorism. Notable outcomes included the seizure of 2.4 tonnes of drugs and the arrest of 36 human traffickers. The IMO presented initiatives such as the Djibouti Code of Conduct and the Safe Seas for Africa Programme, which aim to strengthen regional maritime governance and security frameworks.
