Biotech company Enveda has announced encouraging results from the first clinical trial of its experimental drug, ENV-308, designed to curb appetite and replicate some of the body's effects of physical activity. The pill aims to harness the benefits of lactate
phenylalanine (Lac-Phe), a molecule naturally produced by the body during vigorous exercise, which signals the brain to reduce the urge to eat. Scientists at Stanford discovered Lac-Phe in 2022. The Phase I clinical trial involved 88 healthy adults and primarily focused on assessing the drug's safety and tolerability. Participants tolerated ENV-308 across all tested doses, with the company reporting an "exceptional gastrointestinal safety profile." Early results also indicate that ENV-308 lowers leptin levels in both animals and humans, particularly in individuals with high initial levels of the hormone, which regulates hunger. This reduction in leptin suggests a potential role in weight management by decreasing hunger. Additionally, preclinical models suggest Lac-Phe is involved in regulating metabolic, brain, and inflammatory health, and ENV-308 may mimic these effects.

However, ENV-308 is still in the early stages of development, and it will take several years of rigorous testing to determine its long-term efficacy and safety.
