What's Happening?
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has partnered with Washoe County to expand eduroam, a secure Wi-Fi service, to 80 public locations across the county. This initiative aims to provide students, educators, and researchers with secure internet
access using their existing institutional credentials. The expansion increases Nevada's total eduroam hot spot locations to 350 statewide. Supported by NSHE's System Computing Services, the service is available at no cost to eligible public partners, leveraging state funding to enhance digital connectivity.
Why It's Important?
Expanding secure Wi-Fi access is a significant step towards achieving digital equity, particularly in educational settings. By providing reliable internet access in public spaces, the initiative supports remote learning, research, and educational collaboration. This development is crucial for bridging the digital divide, ensuring that all students and educators have the necessary resources to participate fully in the digital age. The expansion also aligns with broader efforts to enhance digital infrastructure and accessibility, which are vital for economic and educational advancement.
What's Next?
As the initiative progresses, more locations across Nevada may be integrated into the eduroam network, further increasing access to secure internet services. Other states and regions might look to Nevada's model as a blueprint for expanding digital equity initiatives. Continued collaboration between educational institutions, government agencies, and technology providers will be essential to sustain and expand these efforts.
