What's Happening?
The National Kharif Conference, held on May 28-29 at the PUSA campus in New Delhi, brought together Agriculture Ministers from 22 Indian states to discuss sustainable agricultural practices. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized the importance
of shared responsibility in agricultural governance. The conference focused on key issues such as Kharif preparedness, self-reliance in pulses and oilseeds, balanced fertilizer use, and natural farming. A significant outcome was the commitment by state Agriculture Ministers to adopt natural farming practices on their own farms, aiming to inspire confidence among farmers. The conference proposed the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' as a joint national initiative to promote sustainable practices.
Why It's Important?
The conference's outcomes are crucial for India's agricultural sector, which is a significant part of the country's economy and employs a large portion of the population. By promoting sustainable practices and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers, the initiative aims to improve soil health and increase crop yields. The commitment from state ministers to personally adopt these practices could lead to widespread adoption among farmers, potentially transforming agricultural practices across India. This shift towards sustainability could also enhance food security and reduce environmental impact, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
