What's Happening?
Three lions at the Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo have died from suspected heatstroke as Japan experiences high humidity and record temperatures. Since mid-July, 10 out of the zoo's 16 lions have shown symptoms such as loss of appetite and decreased activity.
The zoo has been implementing measures to combat the heat, including improved ventilation and spot air conditioners. Despite these efforts, the sudden onset of heat following the rainy season has been challenging for the animals. Japan has been facing extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 40°C, and the country is working to reduce heat-related deaths, which currently number around 1,300 annually.
