What's Happening?
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a new subsidiary, Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL), to expand its operations internationally. This move aims to undertake consultancy, construction,
and operational projects in regions such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. DMIL will focus on turnkey projects, operational management, and advisory services for urban rail networks. The initiative was announced at the 18th Urban Mobility India Conference, highlighting DMRC's strategy to collaborate with foreign governments and metro operators, leveraging India's expertise in rapid transit systems. DMIL will also manage ongoing operations in major Indian metro projects, including Mumbai Metro Line-3 and Chennai Metro Phase-2.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of DMIL marks a significant step in India's efforts to export its urban mobility solutions globally. By expanding into international markets, DMRC aims to share its operational excellence and promote sustainable transit solutions. This move could enhance India's reputation in urban infrastructure innovation and generate knowledge transfer. The initiative aligns with global priorities for green, efficient, and connected transport systems, offering opportunities for revenue diversification and reinforcing India's position as a leader in affordable, technology-enabled urban transport solutions.
What's Next?
DMRC is revamping its training academy to support DMIL's international ambitions, including an Incubation Centre to foster collaboration among academia, industry, and start-ups. This development aims to nurture sustainable and inclusive transit solutions incorporating innovation and low-carbon strategies. DMIL's international engagements could provide Indian best practices in planning, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability to metropolitan projects worldwide.
