Madelyn Horsman Pyeatt, a pioneering leader in outdoor education, has passed away, leaving behind a significant legacy. Born in Wyoming, Pyeatt's adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity led her to a career in education and outdoor leadership. She
taught English at Oakland Technical High School and was instrumental in founding the school's Trails Club. Through her work with the Sierra Club's Inner City Outings program, she introduced urban youth to outdoor activities such as backpacking and whitewater rafting. Her efforts transformed the program into Inspiring Connections Outdoors, which continues to impact young lives. The Sierra Club honored her contributions by establishing the Madelyn Pyeatt Award for outstanding leadership and service to young people.
