What's Happening?
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has reported receiving approximately 9,500 fitness-to-practise (FtP) concerns in the past year, marking a significant increase from the previous year. Kathie Cashell,
the chief executive of the GPhC, announced this at the Clinical Pharmacy Congress 2026, emphasizing the need for improved timeliness in FtP investigations. The GPhC is implementing an ambitious improvement plan to increase hearings capacity and address the backlog of cases. Despite the high number of concerns, only a small percentage lead to full investigations, and even fewer result in FtP hearings.
Why It's Important?
The rise in FtP concerns reflects growing scrutiny and accountability within the pharmacy profession. The GPhC's efforts to enhance its investigative processes are crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring that pharmacists adhere to professional standards. The increase in concerns may also indicate heightened awareness and reporting of potential issues within the industry. As the GPhC works to improve its processes, the outcomes could influence regulatory practices and set precedents for handling professional conduct cases in healthcare.
What's Next?
The GPhC will continue to implement its improvement plan, aiming to increase hearings capacity and reduce the backlog of cases. The organization may also explore additional measures to prevent the escalation of concerns and enhance support for pharmacy professionals. Stakeholders, including pharmacy associations and regulatory bodies, will likely monitor the GPhC's progress and consider adopting similar strategies to address professional conduct issues in their respective fields.
