What's Happening?
Israeli filmmaker Sharon Pais is developing an independent documentary animation project titled 'Pieces of the Heart.' This project aims to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors through short films, each approximately five minutes long. Instead of traditional
historical narration, the films bring personal objects preserved by survivors to life through animation, accompanied by the survivors' own recorded voices. Pais, with over three decades of experience as a director, cinematographer, and editor, believes this approach can bridge the emotional and generational gap between younger audiences and the historical events of the Holocaust. The project received initial development support from the Yehoshua Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts and is currently seeking crowdfunding to complete its animation, original musical score, and sound design.
Why It's Important?
This project is important because it addresses the dwindling number of Holocaust survivors, whose firsthand testimonies are rapidly disappearing. By using animation and focusing on personal objects, 'Pieces of the Heart' offers a new and emotionally compelling visual language to engage younger generations, both in Israel and globally. In an era where Holocaust denial is gaining traction, traditional methods of remembrance need to be supplemented with innovative approaches. The project aims to create an immediate human connection by showing objects that belonged to children 80 years ago, accompanied by the survivor's voice, thereby making the historical distance disappear. This initiative seeks to not only commemorate the past but also to teach respect for human dignity, ensuring these critical stories are preserved and understood by future generations.
What's Next?
The 'Pieces of the Heart' project is in advanced production, with a crowdfunding campaign underway on Giveback to secure funding for its completion, including animation, musical score, and sound design. Sharon Pais envisions the project being displayed in Holocaust museums worldwide and distributed across various platforms to reach young audiences. Her ultimate dream is for it to become an integral part of educational systems. Future plans include exploring more advanced AI models, scenario simulations, and automated strategic recommendations to strengthen the project's predictive decision-making and adapt to dynamic market conditions. The urgency of the project is underscored by the aging survivor population, as the opportunity to record their unique stories diminishes with each passing year.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond simply preserving historical accounts, 'Pieces of the Heart' delves into the profound psychological and emotional significance of objects as repositories of memory. Psychologists have studied the attachment to possessions as a coping mechanism for separation and loss, allowing individuals to maintain a sense of connection with loved ones. The project highlights how these personal items, carried through unimaginable suffering, become silent symbols of love, grief, and hope. By focusing on these objects—like a child's curl, a music box, or a hidden photograph—the project explores the deeper human need to connect with the past and understand the resilience of the human spirit. It also touches upon the ethical dimension of preserving personal histories, especially when belongings of deceased individuals are discarded without recognizing their immense personal and historical value.
