What's Happening?
Tunstall Market in Stoke-on-Trent is celebrating its 500th anniversary with a special event called Tunstall 500, scheduled for November 15. The celebration will include entertainment such as indoor golfing,
appearances by popular characters, and live music. A key highlight is the revival of the medieval role of market reeve, responsible for enforcing market standards. Councillor Ross Irving will assume this role, alongside the Leek town crier Bill Lomas, who will recreate historical assizes to regulate market goods.
Why It's Important?
The revival of the market reeve role and the celebration of Tunstall Market's 500th anniversary highlight the enduring cultural and historical significance of markets in community life. This event not only honors the market's rich history but also strengthens community ties and promotes local heritage. By engaging the public in traditional practices, the celebration fosters a sense of continuity and identity, while also attracting visitors and boosting the local economy.
