What's Happening?
Czech author Dora Kaprálová has been awarded the 2026 European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) for her book 'Mariborská Hypnóza' (Maribor Hypnosis). The announcement was made at the Warsaw International Book Fair. The EUPL, organized by the Federation
of European Publishers and the European and International Booksellers Federation, aims to promote European literature and encourage interest in non-national literary works. This year, 14 countries participated in the EUPL, highlighting the diverse wealth of contemporary European fiction. Kaprálová's work was selected by a seven-member European jury from a shortlist of 14 books. The prize includes a €10,000 award and financial support for translations.
Why It's Important?
The European Union Prize for Literature plays a significant role in promoting cultural diversity and literary exchange across Europe. By recognizing authors like Kaprálová, the prize encourages the translation and dissemination of European literature beyond national borders, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures. This initiative is particularly crucial at a time when freedom of expression faces challenges globally. The prize not only supports emerging authors but also strengthens the European publishing industry by encouraging publishers to explore new voices and perspectives.
