What's Happening?
Samed Ağırbaş, president of the Zero Waste Foundation, has been appointed as the High-Level Champion for the private sector at COP31. This marks the first time a waste management specialist has taken on this role. The Zero Waste Foundation, supported
by Emine Erdoğan, aims to promote zero-waste practices globally. Ağırbaş will work alongside Turkey's Minister of Environment, Urbanisation, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, to coordinate non-state actor participation in the climate summit.
Why It's Important?
Ağırbaş's appointment underscores the growing importance of waste management in global climate discussions. As COP31 approaches, his role will be crucial in engaging businesses and other non-state actors in adopting sustainable practices. This focus on waste management could lead to significant advancements in environmental policies and practices, influencing both public and private sectors worldwide.
What's Next?
COP31, co-hosted by Turkey and Australia, will take place in November, with Turkey hosting the main talks. Ağırbaş will play a key role in facilitating discussions and collaborations among non-state actors, potentially leading to new partnerships and initiatives in waste management and sustainability.
