What's Happening?
Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, through The Bisciotti Family Foundation, has pledged up to $3 million in scholarships for Baltimore City students attending Morgan State University. This renewed investment aims to support the Ozzie Newsome Scholars
Program, providing financial assistance to close gaps related to tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, and technology. The eight-year grant, facilitated through the Morgan State University Foundation Inc., will run from 2026 through 2033. It is designed to support 40 new Ozzie Newsome Scholars, with 10 students entering in each of the next four incoming classes. Each scholarship will provide $15,000 annually for up to five years, potentially totaling $75,000 per student. Eligibility requirements include being Pell Grant eligible, graduating from a Baltimore City public school or an approved independent school, enrolling in college immediately after high school, and participating in the CollegeBound Foundation’s College Completion Program. This initiative builds upon an initial $4 million commitment made by Bisciotti and his wife, Renee, in 2021 to honor former Ravens executive Ozzie Newsome.
Why It's Important?
This significant financial commitment from Steve Bisciotti and The Bisciotti Family Foundation is crucial for increasing access to higher education for students in Baltimore City, particularly at Morgan State University, a historically Black college or university (HBCU). By addressing financial barriers such as tuition, housing, and technology costs, the scholarship program directly impacts the ability of deserving students to pursue and complete a college education. This investment not only supports individual scholars but also strengthens the educational infrastructure within Baltimore, fostering a more educated workforce and contributing to the city's overall development. The program's focus on Pell Grant eligible students ensures that the aid reaches those with the greatest financial need, promoting educational equity. Furthermore, the long-term nature of the grant, spanning eight years, provides stability and a sustained pathway for future generations of students, reinforcing Morgan State's role as a vital institution for community upliftment and academic achievement.
What's Next?
The Ozzie Newsome Scholars Program will continue to onboard new students, with 10 scholars joining each of the next four incoming classes at Morgan State University. The Morgan State University Foundation Inc. will manage the eight-year grant through 2033, ensuring the funds are distributed according to the program's guidelines. University officials, including Endia M. DeCordova, vice president for institutional advancement, have expressed their commitment to managing these resources with care and accountability to help scholars persist, graduate, and achieve their educational goals. The program's continued success will likely be monitored, with future cohorts of students benefiting from the comprehensive financial and academic support. This sustained investment is expected to further solidify the partnership between The Bisciotti Family Foundation and Morgan State University, potentially inspiring other philanthropic efforts to support educational access in Baltimore and beyond.
Beyond the Headlines
This initiative extends beyond mere financial aid; it represents a deeper commitment to social mobility and community empowerment within Baltimore. By targeting students from Baltimore City public and approved independent schools, the program aims to break cycles of disadvantage and create opportunities for individuals who might otherwise face significant hurdles in accessing higher education. The emphasis on HBCUs like Morgan State University is particularly impactful, as these institutions play a critical role in educating and empowering Black students. The program's holistic approach, covering not just tuition but also living and technological expenses, acknowledges the multifaceted challenges students face. This comprehensive support can lead to higher retention and graduation rates, ultimately contributing to a more diverse and skilled professional landscape. The long-term vision of the Bisciotti Family Foundation underscores a belief in the transformative power of education and its potential to foster lasting positive change in the lives of individuals and the broader community.
