An exceptionally preserved fossilized tooth belonging to an ancient Pacific mastodon (Mammut pacificus) was recently discovered in a San Mateo County creek bed in the Bay Area. The find was announced by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen),
a public agency. Brigid Lynch, a geomorphologist with Balance Hydrologics, found the adult molar while conducting field surveys for a habitat enhancement project.
