What's Happening?
Tulane University has been awarded a four-year, $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program. This grant, one of only nine nationwide, will fund the SMART (Success Model to Advance Research Translation)
Tulane initiative. The program aims to transition faculty and student discoveries from the laboratory into new technologies, licensed products, startup companies, and high-wage careers within the Gulf South region. According to Tulane President Michael A. Fitts, the NSF's support will establish the necessary systems, training, and culture to connect existing research talent and infrastructure, ensuring discoveries reach the marketplace, create jobs, and strengthen the regional economy. The initiative will be led by Kimberly Gramm, David and Marion Mussafer Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer at the Tulane Innovation Institute, with co-investigators Donald Gaver and Ibrahim Demir.
Why It's Important?
This NSF grant is crucial for addressing a structural issue prevalent in research universities within under-resourced regions, where world-class science often lacks the infrastructure and pathways to commercialization. By fostering a robust translational research ecosystem, SMART Tulane is expected to significantly advance prosperity in the Gulf South. The initiative will certify over 120 research translation leaders, known as ART Ambassadors, across Tulane's nine schools, and provide hands-on translational training to 152 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. This training will cover customer discovery, intellectual property strategy, market assessment, and venture formation. The program aims to more than double the annual rate of startup formations from five to twelve or more, with projected median salaries of $80,000 for jobs created, nearly triple the regional median income. This effort not only boosts innovation but also serves as a significant workforce development story for New Orleans and Louisiana.
What's Next?
SMART Tulane will proceed with certifying ART Ambassadors and providing translational training through fellowships, Seed Translational Research Projects, I-Corps programming, and the Tulane University Innovation Institute’s Founder Lab. The initiative plans to develop artificial intelligence-enabled tools to identify market opportunities, scout intellectual property, and match Tulane innovations with industry partners. Tulane will also collaborate with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), a leader in technology commercialization, to adapt and integrate its proven practices within Tulane’s Gulf South mission. This grant-funded work will run concurrently with Tulane’s plans to transform the former Charity Hospital building in downtown New Orleans into a national hub for research and economic development. The practices and tools developed through SMART Tulane will be shared with other institutions, particularly those in under-resourced regions, to broaden the benefits of a stronger national research translation ecosystem.
