What's Happening?
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, in conjunction with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), announced that Gaylord has been selected to participate in the Select Level of the Michigan Main Street (MMS) program. This designation will provide Gaylord with five
years of intensive technical assistance from the MEDC, focusing on revitalization strategies. These strategies are designed to stimulate activity through new retail businesses and events, aiming to foster community pride in the Northern Michigan city. Governor Whitmer emphasized that these investments in revitalization and placemaking contribute to building vibrant communities and bustling main streets where people desire to live, work, and raise families. The MMS program leverages existing infrastructure to enhance vibrancy and strengthen a sense of place, empowering local leaders to guide economic development efforts, support small businesses, attract customers, revitalize the built environment, and cultivate community pride. Gaylord joins 23 other districts already benefiting from the MMS program.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of Gaylord in the Michigan Main Street program is significant for its potential economic and social impact on the community. The five years of intensive technical assistance from the MEDC will provide Gaylord with expert guidance and resources to implement effective revitalization strategies. This support is crucial for fostering small businesses, which are often the backbone of local economies, and for attracting more customers to the downtown area. By revitalizing the built environment and cultivating community pride, the program aims to create a more attractive and functional urban core, which can lead to increased property values, job creation, and a higher quality of life for residents. The program's focus on placemaking aligns with broader economic development goals of creating unique and desirable places, which can draw in new residents and businesses, thereby strengthening Michigan's overall economic landscape. The success of such programs can serve as a model for other communities seeking to rejuvenate their downtowns.
What's Next?
Over the next five years, Gaylord will receive ongoing support and technical assistance from the MEDC to implement its revitalization strategies. This will involve local leaders working to foster small businesses, attract new retail, organize community events, and improve the physical infrastructure of the downtown area. The program aims to generate measurable outcomes, such as increased private investment, the establishment of new businesses, and improvements in building facades and rehabilitations, similar to the successes seen in other MMS communities. Stakeholders, including the Gaylord Downtown Development Authority (DDA), local businesses, and residents, will be actively involved in these efforts. The DDA Executive Director, Lisa Marie Tobin, expressed anticipation for the partnership, highlighting the access to expertise and resources that will strengthen downtown Gaylord as a vibrant gathering place, economic center, and welcoming destination. The city anticipates continued collaboration with the MEDC to develop strategies for a stronger economy and a more vibrant community.
Beyond the Headlines
The Michigan Main Street program's emphasis on community pride and placemaking extends beyond mere economic metrics, touching upon the cultural and social fabric of participating towns. By revitalizing downtowns, the program aims to preserve the unique character of communities like Gaylord, often referred to as an 'Alpine Village.' This focus on local identity helps to counter the homogenization of commercial areas and fosters a stronger sense of belonging among residents. The program also highlights the power of collaborative governance, demonstrating how state, local, and community partners can work together to achieve shared objectives. The long-term success of such initiatives can lead to a virtuous cycle where a vibrant downtown attracts more talent and investment, further enhancing the community's resilience and appeal. This approach recognizes that economic development is not solely about financial growth but also about creating sustainable, livable, and culturally rich environments that enhance the overall quality of life.
