Uzbekistan has experienced a significant increase in tourism, welcoming 6.56 million foreign tourists in the first half of 2026, marking a 24.9% rise compared to the same period last year. This growth is attributed to the country's efforts to enhance
its tourism sector through improved connectivity, simplified travel procedures, and infrastructure investments. The National Statistics Committee reports that neighboring countries, particularly Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, are the largest sources of visitors. Additionally, China has shown one of the fastest growth rates in tourist arrivals. Uzbekistan's rich cultural heritage and historic landmarks, such as Registan Square in Samarkand and the ancient Ark Fortress in Bukhara, continue to attract international visitors.
Why It's Important?
The surge in tourism is a crucial driver of Uzbekistan's economic growth, contributing approximately 3.5% to the country's GDP and generating up to $5 billion annually in service exports. The government has set a strategic roadmap to double the industry's economic footprint by 2030, with annual tourism revenue expected to exceed $6 billion. This growth not only boosts the national economy but also enhances Uzbekistan's global standing as a leading travel destination in Central Asia. The increase in tourism supports job creation and infrastructure development, further solidifying the sector's role as a key economic pillar.
