What's Happening?
Medicare Advantage beneficiaries receiving letters about plan terminations or significant network changes are granted Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) to switch plans. When a Medicare Advantage plan does not renew, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) provides a Non-Renewal SEP from December 8 to the end of February, allowing beneficiaries to join a different plan or return to Original Medicare. Additionally, a significant network change, such as a hospital leaving the network, may trigger a SEP. Beneficiaries have a 63-day window to secure a Medigap policy without medical underwriting, offering protection against health-based premium increases.
Why It's Important?
The availability of SEPs and guaranteed-issue rights for Medigap policies provides critical flexibility for Medicare beneficiaries facing plan changes. These provisions ensure that beneficiaries can maintain access to necessary healthcare services without facing financial penalties due to pre-existing conditions. Understanding these rights is crucial for beneficiaries to make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage, especially in light of rising healthcare costs and potential changes in provider networks. The ability to switch plans or secure Medigap coverage without underwriting can significantly impact beneficiaries' financial and health security.
