A new study published in JAMA Network Open, led by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Boston University, and Tufts Medical Center, reveals that individuals with at least one parent who lived to 100 years or older tend to live longer and experience
a delayed onset of certain age-related diseases. The study, the largest of its kind, analyzed data from 2,319 centenarians' offspring and 2,703 control participants across three long-running studies: LonGenity, the New England Centenarian Study (NECS), and the UK Biobank. The findings indicate that these offspring had a 42% lower risk of death, a 33% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 32% lower risk of hypertension at any given age, with death occurring about three years later and hypertension about five years later on average. These health advantages remained largely consistent even after accounting for lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol use, exercise, diet, education, and socioeconomic status, suggesting an underlying biological or genetic component.
