What's Happening?
The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is emphasizing the impact of women in the tourism industry as part of International Women’s Day celebrations. Under the theme 'Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,' the CTO is highlighting the leadership
roles women play in the Caribbean's vital tourism sector. Dona Regis-Prosper, the first woman to serve as Secretary-General and CEO of the CTO, underscored the importance of advocacy for gender equality, noting that women globally still hold only 64% of the legal rights that men do. The CTO plans to feature women leaders in its annual magazine, 'From the Sea Suite,' during the Caribbean Women’s Leadership Dinner & Awards in New York.
Why It's Important?
The focus on women's leadership in tourism by the CTO is crucial for promoting gender equality and recognizing the contributions of women in a key economic sector. Tourism is a significant industry in the Caribbean, and highlighting women's roles can inspire further progress towards gender parity. By showcasing successful women leaders, the CTO aims to encourage more women to pursue leadership positions, thereby fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry. This initiative also aligns with global efforts to dismantle barriers to equal justice and opportunity for women and girls, contributing to broader social and economic development goals.
What's Next?
The CTO will continue to advocate for gender equality in tourism, with plans to release the second edition of 'From the Sea Suite' magazine, celebrating women leaders in the industry. The magazine will be launched during the Caribbean Women’s Leadership Dinner & Awards, part of Caribbean Week in New York. This event will provide a platform for women in tourism to share their stories and achievements, further promoting visibility and representation. The CTO's ongoing efforts are expected to inspire policy changes and initiatives that support women's advancement in tourism and other sectors.
