What's Happening?
The Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency has issued a warning about a scam targeting seniors who receive CalFresh food assistance benefits. Scammers are reportedly posing as CalFresh representatives, visiting homes, and requesting to see residents'
electronic benefit transfer cards, California identification, and Social Security cards in exchange for gifts. The agency has clarified that legitimate employees will not ask for such information outside of official county offices and will always display county-issued identification badges. Residents are advised to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an HHSA employee by contacting the agency directly.
Why It's Important?
This scam poses a significant threat to vulnerable populations, particularly seniors who rely on CalFresh benefits for essential food assistance. The fraudulent activity not only risks the theft of personal information but also undermines trust in public assistance programs. Raising awareness about the scam is crucial to protecting beneficiaries from potential financial harm and identity theft. The situation highlights the need for increased vigilance and security measures to safeguard public assistance programs and their recipients. It also underscores the importance of community education and outreach to prevent such scams from succeeding.
