What's Happening?
Operation Blue Skies, a new initiative, is employing artificial intelligence (AI) to mitigate aviation's climate impact by preventing the formation of strongly warming contrails. These contrails, condensation trails formed by aircraft exhaust, contribute
approximately one-third of aviation's total climate impact. The program will operate within the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor, specifically Shanwick airspace, which accounts for about 5% of global contrail warming. This 30-month program includes two operational trials, each lasting approximately four months. During these trials, around 10,000 flights originating from hundreds of cities will pass through Shanwick airspace. A small percentage of these flights, which would otherwise traverse contrail-sensitive airspace, will be slightly rerouted to avoid forming warming contrails. This initiative builds on previous research demonstrating the scientific validity and operational practicality of using AI to avoid contrails, with partnerships across the aviation industry including American Airlines.
