What's Happening?
Dr. Namukolo Covic has been appointed as the Head of the CGIAR Liaison Office for Africa, effective January 1, 2026. In her new role, Dr. Covic will support the CGIAR Continental Champion for Africa, currently Dr. Simeon Ehui, in advancing CGIAR's mission
to transform food, land, and water systems across the continent. The Liaison Office, based in Addis Ababa, aims to strengthen coordination among CGIAR Centers, regional partners, and continental institutions, ensuring that CGIAR's science aligns with Africa's priorities and policy agendas.

Dr. Covic's appointment is crucial for enhancing CGIAR's engagement in Africa, as she brings a wealth of experience in nutrition, food systems innovation, and policy engagement. Her leadership is expected to facilitate the development of a demand-driven research and innovation portfolio that addresses African priorities. This strategic role is vital for CGIAR's efforts to contribute to sustainable and resilient food systems in Africa, impacting food security and agricultural development across the continent.
What's Next?
Dr. Covic will continue to serve as the ILRI Director General's representative in Ethiopia during the transition period, ensuring continuity while ILRI recruits her successor. CGIAR will focus on strengthening partnerships with African institutions and partners, aiming to advance sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. The Liaison Office will play a key role in coordinating CGIAR's engagement with the African Union and other regional bodies, aligning scientific research with policy agendas.
