What's Happening?
State Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, has extended her best wishes to local students Abella Beckman and Ollie Swain as they embark on the historic Kokoda Trek. The students departed on June 27 after being awarded the John 'Jack' Dawson Kokoda Scholarship.
This scholarship is designed to recognize young individuals who exhibit leadership, community spirit, and a dedication to learning about Australia's military history. The trek offers participants a chance to walk the Kokoda Trail, visiting significant battle sites and the Bomana War Cemetery, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the courage and sacrifice of Australian soldiers during World War II. The scholarship is supported by local organizations including Kilmore Racing Club and Seymour RSL.
Why It's Important?
The Kokoda Trek is a significant educational opportunity that allows young Australians to connect with their country's military history in a profound way. By participating in this trek, students like Abella and Ollie not only honor the legacy of those who served but also become ambassadors for historical education within their communities. This experience is expected to enhance their leadership skills and community involvement, fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens. The support from local organizations underscores the community's commitment to preserving and promoting historical awareness.
What's Next?
Upon their return, Abella and Ollie are expected to share their experiences as Kokoda Ambassadors. They will engage with local schools, community groups, and service clubs to disseminate the knowledge and insights gained from their journey. This initiative aims to inspire others and ensure that the stories of bravery and sacrifice from the Kokoda campaign continue to be remembered and appreciated by future generations.
