What's Happening?
Sasol, a JSE-listed energy and chemicals group, has commissioned a 2 kW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser system at its Research and Technology campus in Sasolburg, South Africa. This initiative is a collaboration with public-sector and academic
partners, including the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation's Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) programme, the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), and North-West University. The electrolyser will serve as a platform for testing hydrogen production technologies and evaluating locally developed electrolyser technology under renewable energy conditions. The project aims to support local skills development and the commercialisation of green hydrogen technologies. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Professor Blade Nzimande highlighted the strategic importance of critical minerals in South Africa's clean energy ambitions, emphasizing the role of platinum group metals in future industries.
