What's Happening?
The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), a global non-profit organization, has announced the appointment of Agnes Dasewicz as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2027. Dasewicz, currently the Chief Program and Investment
Officer, is the first internal leader to be appointed to this role. GEAPP was founded in 2021 by The Rockefeller Foundation, IKEA Foundation, and Bezos Earth Fund with the mission to accelerate clean energy access and economic opportunities, particularly in emerging economies. The Alliance operates on two main pillars: 'Grids of the Future,' which focuses on strengthening energy supply through AI-enabled, renewables-ready power grids, and 'Powering Opportunity,' which aims to help communities utilize clean energy for business development, job creation, and economic growth. Since its launch at COP26 in Glasgow, GEAPP has made significant progress, on track to provide new or improved clean energy access to over 90 million people, create or enhance more than 3 million jobs, and prevent nearly 300 million tons of carbon emissions.
Why It's Important?
This leadership transition for GEAPP comes at a critical juncture for the global energy sector, marked by geopolitical tensions, shrinking development budgets, and widening economic disparities that risk leaving emerging economies behind. Dasewicz's extensive background in global finance, investment, and economic development, including her previous roles at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), USAID, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is expected to be crucial in accelerating GEAPP's mission. Her experience in mobilizing capital and forging strategic partnerships will be vital in transforming energy systems in developing nations, ensuring that clean energy initiatives not only provide power but also foster sustainable economic growth and job creation. The Alliance's focus on both energy supply and demand aims to create a reinforcing cycle of abundant energy and economic opportunity, addressing market fragmentation that has historically hindered progress in energy access.
What's Next?
Agnes Dasewicz will assume her role as CEO on January 1, 2027, leading GEAPP into its next phase of growth. Her immediate priorities will include building on the Alliance's current progress, demonstrating effective strategies, fostering local alliances to scale solutions, and accelerating the transformation of entire energy systems. GEAPP plans to continue its 130 projects across Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The organization is also a founding partner of Mission 300, a World Bank and African Development Bank-led initiative to connect 300 million people in Africa to electricity by 2030. Under Dasewicz's leadership, GEAPP will likely intensify its efforts to collaborate with governments, development finance institutions, philanthropies, and the private sector to mobilize investment and drive energy systems transformation at scale.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of an internal leader like Agnes Dasewicz signals a strategic continuity and a deep understanding of GEAPP's operational framework and challenges. Her background as a former senior U.S. development finance executive suggests a strong emphasis on practical, investable solutions and a focus on leveraging financial mechanisms to achieve development goals. This approach is particularly relevant given the current global economic climate, where innovative financing models are essential to bridge the funding gap for clean energy projects in emerging markets. The Alliance's dual focus on 'Grids of the Future' and 'Powering Opportunity' highlights a holistic strategy that recognizes the interconnectedness of energy access, economic development, and climate action. This integrated approach could serve as a model for other international development efforts, emphasizing that sustainable energy transitions must be equitable and inclusive to be truly effective.
