What's Happening?
The Squam Lakes Association (SLA) is organizing a National Trails Day event on June 6, 2026, to maintain and enhance the hiking trails in the Squam Lakes region. This event will involve a volunteer-driven effort to clean and clear a section of the hiking network
near Center Sandwich, New Hampshire. Participants will embark on a two-mile hike up the Wentworth Trail to the summit of Mt. Israel, where they will work on clearing water bars and removing brush and blowdowns. The SLA has been maintaining these trails for over 75 years, with a network that includes 57 miles of hiking trails and 3 miles of mountain bike trails. The organization relies heavily on volunteers, contributing over 2,500 hours annually to trail construction and maintenance. The event is weather-dependent, and participants are encouraged to register through the SLA's website.
Why It's Important?
National Trails Day highlights the importance of maintaining and preserving local trails, which provide significant recreational and environmental benefits. The event organized by the Squam Lakes Association not only helps in the upkeep of these trails but also fosters community involvement and environmental stewardship. By participating, volunteers contribute to the sustainability of natural resources and ensure that these trails remain accessible and safe for public use.
