Tempus AI, Inc. has been awarded up to $9.5 million in funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This funding, provided through ARPA-H’s ADVOCATE (Agentic
AI-EnableD CardioVascular CAre TransfOrmation) program, is designated for the development of the first autonomous clinical AI agent capable of delivering safe and effective care to patients suffering from heart failure. The initiative aims to create an AI agent that functions as an extension of the clinician team, providing continuous surveillance across clinical data (electronic health records) and consumer-generated data (home-based heart rate monitors). This platform will feature a patient-facing autonomous agent to manage symptoms, medications, virtual rehabilitation, and scheduling, while also integrating with electronic health records for accurate documentation and coordination. The development will include clinical validation of the AI system through a multi-center prospective study.

Heart failure affects over 6 million Americans, with nearly half dying within five years of diagnosis. Despite the availability of life-prolonging therapies, less than 25% of these patients receive all guideline-recommended care. A significant contributing factor is the scarcity of cardiologists, with nearly 46% of U.S. counties lacking a single practicing cardiologist.
