Master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi, known for revolutionizing Los Angeles' sushi scene, has died unexpectedly at the age of 67. Uechi, originally from Okinawa, Japan, moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s and opened Sushi Katsu-ya in Studio City in 1997. He
is credited with introducing the spicy tuna crispy rice, a dish that became a staple in sushi restaurants across the United States. Uechi's approach to sushi combined traditional techniques with bold, modern flavors, helping to redefine California's sushi culture. His restaurant group confirmed his passing in an Instagram post, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
